Is your New Year’s resolution to get back on your bike? Here at Cyclehoop, our mission is to break down the barriers to people cycling. With that in mind, we’ve compiled 10 reasons to get you spinning those wheels through 2019.
Our vision is healthy people cycling on safe streets, so we wanted to give you some tips from people who cycle. It’s also worth getting yourself involved with some of our favourite cycling organisations, like the London Cycling Campaign and Sustrans.

1. Cycling is environmentally friendly
Cycling is an environmentally friendly way to travel, as there are less fuel emissions. You will be doing your bit to counteract climate change and global warming. You will also be operating more sustainably to contribute to a healthier city to live in.
2. Build your fitness
Cycling is an ideal way to build up your fitness because it’s for everyone. You can go at your own pace, and it won’t be long before you’re noticing the difference in your fitness levels.
3. Exercise makes you feel good
Did you know that exercise releases positive endorphins that make you feel good throughout the day? This is a superb reason to do some cycling, knowing that you are going to feel better for it afterwards.
4. Safe, clean streets
It will keep your streets safe – remember the days when kids played on the streets? More people cycling reduces the cars on your roads, making your streets safer. It also keeps your streets clean. Less cars will mean your streets are less polluted and cleaner.
5. Make cycling part of your commute
It’s recommended that you do at least 30 minutes of exercise a day. Making cycling a part of your commute makes that achievable, and you’ll be well on your way to your recommended guideline.
6. Beat the traffic
In some instances, cycling actually gets you places faster than driving, walking or taking a bus. On your bike, you’re less likely to be stuck in queuing traffic.
7. Save money
You’ll save money on travel, because cycling is cheaper than driving or getting public transport. With the money you save, you can treat yourself to something.
8. Meet new people
It’s the perfect way to meet people. You can join a club, an iBikeLondon party or your local campaign. Engaging with your local community will improve your city, bringing people together in the process. The people you meet will have the activity of cycling in common with you, and it will be a common interest you can bond over.
9. Explore your city
It gives you an opportunity to get to know your surroundings. London is an amazing city, so why not grab a Santander Cycle and get to know your city by bike? There’s lots to explore, and doing it by bike will help you see your city with a new pair of eyes. It’s highly likely that you’ll discover something you’ve never seen before.
10. It’s for everyone, not just MAMILs
You don’t need to be clad in Lycra to ride a bike. There are so many types of bikes out there that suit a wide range of abilities, so you are bound to find something that suits you. Grab a trike, cargo bike, fixie or a road bike and start spinning those wheels.
